Limited Power
By Katrina
The power of the government should be limited for many different reasons. In many countries with unlimited governments, the leaders have caused problems among the citizens, which sometimes affects its surrounding countries. In countries with a dictatorship or communism, the people have no say about politics or of how the country should be run. If the government is unlimited, the countries’ leaders usually focus on themselves. In many of these governments, there is sometimes censorship, which limits the people’s freedom of press and of speech.
In limited governments, such as direct democracies, representative democracies, and constitutional monarchies, the leaders focus more on their country than themselves. The people have a say. They can influence the government easily by voting on leaders and/or representatives. Voting normally has a good influence in the government by choosing the leader or representative that more people feel is good for the government.
If a limited government becomes unlimited, the citizens will lose their rights and freedoms. In limited governments, the leaders, representatives, and people with power can lose their power if they are unconstitutional or go against the law or people. In the United States’ Pledge of Allegiance, it says, ”With liberty and justice for all.” It states that everyone has rights and freedoms.
The people who are lucky enough to live in limited governments have rights and freedoms that cannot be taken away. The leaders in the unlimited governments focus mostly on themselves than on the people of the country, while the leaders in the limited governments focus more on the people. Limited governments are known as “rule by many” and “rule by the people”, because there is not one person with all of the power.

Citizen Opportunities
By Katrina
The different opportunities for citizens to participate in can influence the government in many ways. Protesting and voting are two of the ways citizens help to change and influence their government. In limited governments the leaders are elected by the citizens, which is one way they can influence their government. Sometimes the citizens protest by physically fighting with the government.
In the country of Egypt, the citizens protested against their president. Eventually, after eighteen days of the citizens’ protests, the president gave up. The situation was very different in the country of China. When the citizens protested, they were killed. The military also massacred citizens one night.
In Scotland, they were able to have the chance to influence the government without violence. So, instead of protesting or fighting, they held a nationwide vote. Then, the citizens who voted (about eighty percent of those who were able to vote) surprised the officials. Fifty-five percent of those who voted chose to stay and only about forty-five percent wanted their own country.
These are a few of the many ways that citizens can help to change their government. They can protest or physically fight against it. Simply just voting for president in a representative democracy will influence the country’s government.
